How to Download

  • Download one of the programs by clicking on the download link. Several are provided in case one is slow or temporarily off line.

  • With most browsers, a window will pop up asking you if you want to 'open' or 'save' the file. Choose 'Save'.

  • Your browser should then ask you what folder you want to save the file in. Usually it will automatically go to whatever folder you last saved a file in. It is a good idea to create a special folder (called C:\downloads, for example) where you save downloaded files. Then you will always know where they are. When this window appears you should also make a note of the name of the file - you will need to know that to find it later.
  • Your browser will then begin downloading the file. How long this takes depends on the size of the file, the speed of your modem, and the level of internet traffic at the time.

  • When the file is done downloading, start Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) and go to the folder where you saved the file. Or you could go to the folder using 'My Computer'. Double-click on the name of the file (for Animated Beginning Typing, for example, this would be 'atype.zip', although you may see it simply as 'atype') and the unzip program will allow you to unzip the zip file.
  • If you can't find the file you downloaded, you must know the filename (for example, 'atype'). If you know the filename, you can click on the Windows 'Start' button, and then use 'Find', 'Files or Folders'... and do a search on the filename to find where the file is located on your computer.

To Unzip:

  • A zip file is a single compressed file that contains a complete set of program files. Compressed files are valuable in the electronic world because they cut your downloading time drastically, and make it possible to download just one file instead of a number of different files (which can often number in the dozens).

  • To decompress (meaning UNZIP) a compressed file (meaning a ZIP or zipped file), you'll need a special program like those listed below.

  • After downloading a Zip file, open Windows Explorer and double-click on the file name and when you see a window asking you where to decompress the files to, the best thing is to use a temporary folder (for example, 'C:\Temp). Now, still using Windows Explorer, look in the folder where you decompressed the files and look for a file called something like 'setup.exe' or 'set_word.exe'. Double-click on it and it will bring up the installation program.

  • If you see some sort of error message when decompressing a file, it's possible that the file was not completely downloaded - this can happen occasionally with large files. To fix this, the best thing is to download the file again.
